What is a warehouse management system (WMS)?
A WMS is the system of record for everything physically moving through your warehouse — receiving, putaway, storage locations, picking, packing, despatch and returns. It differs from a plain inventory module in that it tracks where stock sits and who moved it, not just how many units you own.
What's the difference between a WMS and a WCS?
A WMS decides what should happen — which order to pick next, which location to pull from, which rotation rule applies. A warehouse control system (WCS) drives the machinery that carries it out: conveyors, sorters, AS/RS cranes. Most Malaysian operations need a WMS first; a WCS only becomes relevant once fixed automation is on the floor.
Is a WMS worth it for a small warehouse?
It depends less on floor area than on SKU count, batch or expiry tracking, and how many people touch the same stock. A single-operator store room rarely needs one. A small F&B distributor running FEFO across chilled and ambient stock usually does, because the cost of one wrong despatch already exceeds the cost of the system.
Is the system cloud-based or on-premise?
Both are supported. Cloud suits multi-site operations and 3PL arrangements where head office and the warehouse are in different states; on-premise still makes sense where connectivity is unreliable or where a customer contract requires data to stay on site.
Can Odoo be used as a warehouse management system?
Odoo Inventory covers a good portion of standard WMS work and is a reasonable starting point when you also need accounting and sales in the same system.
